let's just forget about all that, shall we?
it's been a while! it's been a while. it's even been a while since i took these photos. last year i went to finland on vacation, taking two of my cameras - my agfa isolette and my then-newest (lol) acquisition, an olympus pen ee-2. i hadn't intended it, but those are the cameras of mine that take the largest and smallest format photos respectively. it's a pretty funny dichotomy. here's a big shot, courtesy of the isolette.
and here's a small shot from the pen.
and here's what they look like in proportion (real size of the negatives, if my CSS works and your browser knows your screen size or some such set of conditions)
isn't that nice! (?)
(actually, they're quite a bit too small on my screen. supposed to be about 6x6cm and 1.8x2.4cm, respectively. regardless,)
so in this post i'll be showing off the big big photos. there's not so many of them, but i'm quite happy with how they turned out, overall.
the little guys will be in another year and a half or so i guess.
this first b/w batch i took around finlandia hall. this was kind of a dedicated photo trip on my first full day in helsinki.
and i know this one is also from somewhere around there but...
huh? lol
random nondescript chunk of granite in the city. it's more likely than you think! but i can't remember taking this at all. and just in general...
i've really been noticing that i have an odd sensibility in my vacation photos.
which is really just to say that i take photos as usual. an extension, i guess, of my aversion to taking photos of people. i barely ever have any photos of myself or my friends on vacation which even i find odd. i should work on this whole thing anyway. people are real.
well, that's about the extent of that.
but i did also take color photos! elsewhere!
these are from suomenlinna! "the island fortress off helsinki".
that's helsinki there.
the scenery on this island is fantastic. i didn't even end up going to the museum or anything, i just wandered around mostly...
i did go to the café and gift shop, though. so it goes.
it is the "island fortress", though... there is a military history which i'm sure is interesting, but there's also an ongoing military presence. that being the one thing that really put a damper on what may be one of my favorite places i've been... so it goes!
a lot of what i liked of the place in this one. nature and historic structures, the granite terrain that is a lot of fun to navigate, and a scarcity of people.
well, they were supposed to be less scarce in this one though!
another thing i love doing: taking a photo with something i feel is a prominent highlight, except in the final scene it's so so small you can put it in your back pocket. did you even see those people? they don't stand out much if you don't know they're there.
that's also a feature of this last one. it stood out to me way more in person...
well. call it a happy accident, because this is my favorite shot from the bunch. i don't really know what it is! maybe it's just me, i donno! all of it taken together, the composition, color palette, terrain... when i was staring at this what it evoked to me was something like "scene from a myst-like game set in antiquity". i really don't know. but i love looking at it.
regardless of whether you see what i'm cooking or not (i barely can, you know) i do really recommend suomenlinna if you're ever in helsinki. i really enjoyed myself there.
in fact, it's the island so nice i went there twice! and i shot my so-far only ever roll of slide film there also. if those turned out at all (no idea!) i'll add them here - when i get them back from development.
haha! in my defense, it's only mostly my fault! they did also take more than a month to develop them. and i should make a post for the little guy photos anyhow... well, no promises on the timeline as usual lol
actually, i'll just promise it! why not. all of that will be here before my next vacation. i'm just not telling you when that is. well, until later anyhow...
